Treatment

In Hypothyroidism, there is low secretion of thyroid hormones, hence standard treatment involves the daily use of the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine. Continuous use of these drugs helps to maintain normal thyroid hormone levels.

Once the treatment for Hypothyroidism has started, a person should have regular checkup of thyroid hormones every 3- 6 months since it has been commonly seen that patients on external thyroid hormones go into a hyperthyroid (excess thyroid hormone) state that can cause adverse reactions like increased heart rate, abnormal heart rhythm, insomnia and loose stools.

More so, conventional treatment for Hypothyroidism provides mere symptomatic relief from the disease, but sustenance of normal hormonal levels depends on the overall health of the individual in general.
