Conventional Treatment for Benign Enlargement of Prostate (BEP)
- The two major groups of conventional medicines useful for managing the symptoms of BEP are alpha blockers and 5α-reductase inhibitors.
- Surgical measures include Transurethral resection of prostate, which is the commonest surgery performed. Other procedures include Transurethral microwave therapy and Transurethral needle ablation.
The above modes, however, cannot control recurrence of the condition. Additionally, alpha blockers can manifest side effects like low blood pressure and dizziness while men on 5α-reductase inhibitors frequently complain of a low sex drive and difficult erection after the medication.
