Glossary of Terms
  • Benign: refers to a condition, tumour, or growth that is not cancerous. It does not spread to other parts of the body or destroy nearby tissue.
  • Papules: Circumscribed, solid elevations of skin with no visible fluid, varying in size from a pinhead to 1 cm. They can be pink, red, brown or purple in colour.
  • Autoinoculation:literally means implanting within the self. Diseases like Molluscum Contagiosum.and Warts can be spread in the same organism from one part of the body to another merely by touching.
  • Immune System: The system of organs and processes of the body that provide resistance to and protection from infection and toxins. Organs include thymus, bone marrow, and lymph nodes.
  • Atopic Dermatitis / Eczema: This is a type of allergic skin disease consisting of itching, redness and raised eruptions.
  • Hypopigmentation: Is when skin becomes of a lighter colour than the surrounding normal skin.
  • Keratitis: It is the inflammation of the cornea of the eye.
  • Conjunctivitis: It is the inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye.
