Gallstones can remain in our body as silent stones without any symptoms until it is presented as an agonizing pain or detected by ultrasonography.
However in case of biliary colic, following treatment for gallstones is indicated-
- Medications to dissolve gallstones- Certain medications help in dissolving the stones and help in relieving the pain.
- Surgery- In some cases where stones are large and get impacted and cause obstruction to the flow of bile, the gallbladder is surgically removed. This is called a cholecystectomy.
The key to successful treatment for gallstones is to reduce the intensity as well as frequency of the attacks, and control the tendency of the patient to react adversely to triggers.
