- Antiviral drugs: Antiviral drugs such as acyclovir and famciclovir are prescribed in treatment for oral herpes only in babies, children or adults with weakened immunity. However, they have unpleasant side effects and do not guarantee prevention of relapses.
- Topical creams: Creams containing antiviral medications as well as painkillers are also prescribed for symptomatic relief. Their effect, though, is short-lived and temporary.
