Definition of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic multisystem disease of unknown cause. It can be defined as a chronic immuno-inflammatory disease of unknown causation that affects joints and extra- articular tissues.

Although there are variety of symptoms spanning different systems, the characteristic feature of Rheumatoid Arthritis is persistent inflammatory joint disease, usually involving peripheral joints in a symmetric distribution.

The severity of the disease may vary from mild to severe and if not adequately treated at proper time, may cause substantial loss of function and mobility of all joints.
