  • 6 Are there any serious outcomes if Sciatica is not treated?

If Sciatica is not treated or not been taken care of, then there are certain complications such as:

    • Muscle Weakness: The sciatic nerve which is compressed is called the PINCHED nerve, and if this "pinching" continues for a long time, it leads to chronic muscle weakness and even muscle wasting.
    • Foot Drop: As the name suggests, the foot literally "drops". This happens because of extreme weakness of the muscles present in the front portion of the lower leg and foot.
    • Loss of Sensation: Because the sciatic nerve is also responsible for sensitivity to touch in the back portion of the buttocks and leg, a sciatic compression can lead to feelings of "ants crawling all over the leg", and in severe cases, complete loss of sensation.
    • Incontinence: Very bad cases of sciatic nerve compression can cause urinary and / or stool incontinence.

Timely and appropriate homeopathic treatment can effectively control the disease in its early stages and can help greatly in preventing these complications.

  • 7 Can I prevent the development of Sciatica?

The risks of developing Sciatica can be significantly lowered by following some simple measures.

    • Bending: Never bend forward directly to lift any objects or weights from the ground. Keeping the hip straight, bend your knees and then lift the object.
    • Smoking: Believe it or not, cigarette smoking hastens disc degeneration. Best avoided!
    • Exercise: Regular exercise helps to strengthen the muscles of the back and abdomen and prevent compression.
    • Posture: Maintaining proper, erect posture in your day to day activities helps to prevent nerve compression. If your occupation entails constant sitting, take a break for 2-3 minutes every hour for a brief stroll.

  • 8 Which are the exercises advisable for Sciatica?

    • Knee to chest stretch: It improves the flexibility of your low back. Lie on your back on a mat. Place a small flat cushion or book under your head. Bend your knees and keep your feet straight and hip-width apart. Keep your upper body relaxed and your chin gently tucked in. Bend one knee up towards your chest and grasp your knee with both hands. Slowly increase this stretch as comfort allows. Hold for 20-30 seconds with controlled deep breaths. Repeat three times, alternating legs.
    • Sciatic mobilising stretch: It mobilises the sciatic nerve and thigh muscles. Lie on your back. Place a small flat cushion or book under your head. Bend your knees and keep your feet straight and hip-width apart. Keep your upper body relaxed and your chin gently tucked in. Bend one knee up towards your chest and grasp your hamstrings (five tendons of muscles present behind knee/lowest part of thigh) with both hands below the knee. Slowly straighten the knee while bringing your foot towards you. Hold for 20-30 seconds taking deep breaths. Bend the knee and return to the starting position. Repeat two or three times, alternating legs.

  • 9 How can I manage Sciatica at home?

    • Improve your posture to prevent strain and loss of flexibility.
    • Improve muscle tone by regular exercise.
    • Sleep on a firm mattress.
    • Ice application to painful area may relieve the pain.
    • Consult a doctor for prolonged or severe symptoms.
    • Avoid any sudden, jerky movement of the back.
    • Do not bend but kneel to pick up things from the floor.
    • Cut down on fats and carbohydrates.

  • 10 I was told to take hot fomentation to reduce the pain. How should I do it and for how long?

In Sciatica especially of the Acute type, application of hot and cold packs alternately help to control the pain for the time being. The 20-2-20 rule applies here.

First: Application of ice pack for 20 minutes 2-3 times a day for 2 days.

Second: Hot pad application for 20 minutes 2-3 times a day for 2 days.

  • 11 What are the treatments available for Sciatica?

Conventional medicines include muscle relaxants, painkillers, Antidepressants, Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs. Sometimes steroidal injections are also given directly into the spine to reduce the inflammation of the sciatic nerves. However, this could be a dangerous procedure as nerve may be injured or damaged permanently. Post puncture pain is often very severe.

    Certain physical therapies are:

    • Adopting correct posture and pillow during sleep.
    • Yoga
    • Acupuncture
    • Meditation
    • Physiotherapy

These may be effective for restoring range of motion, flexibility, and core strengthening and making your muscles stronger. Surgery is occasionally performed to decrease the compression of nerves when pains do not subside with medications and physical therapies.

Unfortunately, conventional treatments are very short lived. Pain killers act as long as they are taken post-which the pain remains persistent. Even surgeries do not assure a complete recovery and the chances of recurrences are always likely.

Homeopathic treatment, along with some exercises and lifestyle modifications is one of the best ways to treat Sciatica as it ensures that the disease is taken care from its root.
