Pink eye (Conjunctivitis) is inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane (conjunctiva) that lines the eyelids and covers the white part of the eyeball. It is a very common condition, which usually affects both eyes at the same time, although it can start in one and spread to the other within a day or two.
Conjunctivitis is not a serious condition, although it can be very uncomfortable and unpleasant. It is commonly caused due to wide range of bacteria, viruses, allergy-provoking agents and irritants. This disease is more common in childhood, but occurs in adults as well.
When Conjunctivitis occurs in newborn during the first month of life it is known as Opthalmia Neonatorum.
