Treatment for Tonsillitis will depend on the cause. In the initial stage some pain reliefs, anti-inflammatory medications should be taken. Some home remedial measure like salt water gargling , lozenges, warm drinks with honey can soothe the throat.
If the infection is bacterial, then a course of antibiotics should be the primary choice. However, if tonsillitis is recurrent or persistent, or if enlarged tonsils cause upper airway obstruction or difficulty in eating, then surgical removal of the tonsils called tonsillectomy, may be necessary.
