- Gout, is the result of deposition of crystals of a substance called uric acid, in the joints of the body.
- Uric acid is a waste product formed in the body because of protein breakdown. And because it is not required, uric acid is flushed out of the body by the kidneys.
- Sometimes though, it may happen that the levels of uric acid may rise abnormally in the blood.
- This can happen because of eating foods rich in purines (a protein that is broken down into uric acid) or when the kidneys are not able to function properly and eliminate uric acid from the body.
- The blood becomes uric acid-heavy, and crystals get deposited in the joints. This results in pain, redness and swelling precipitating gout.
