Introduction

Menopause is a stage of life that every woman has to encounter. Ovaries of women produce female hormones like oestrogen and progesterone; which is stopped at this stage and it is also marked by cessation of menstruation.

Symptoms are evident years before last period since hormone production gradually decreases and menstruation also ceases.

Menopause sets in when there is absence of period for about twelve months provided the wowan is not pregnant or lactating. Menopause is also called Climacteric or change of life.

Menopause can also be induced or surgical too. If ovaries are removed surgically then menopause sets in immediately and symptoms are severe; since there is sudden deprivation of hormone. Partial hysterectomy where ovaries are not removed will result in stoppage of periods but there is production of female hormones. Commonly menopause occurs between 45-50 years of age. Since oestrogen hormone play a significant role, their absence results in array of symptoms. Though, these symptoms are not experienced by every woman, few women suffer from one or more than one symptom. Menopause is the end of menstrual cycles. It is a natural biological process which also signifies end of natural ability of bearing children in woman. But sexual life of woman is not affected.

Perimenopause is the time period around final cessation of menses (i.e. menopause) where there is fluctuation of hormones, leading to menopause. Symptoms or problems of menopause starts during this period and may stop or continue at menopause. It marks roadway towards the end of reproductive life.

Post-menopause is the time after menopause has set in till end.
