A careful history should be obtained from parents as well as the child who is suffering from bedwetting as this will help to find out the type of enuresis, the probable causes and predisposing factors related to it. Parents should maintain a diary and keep a track of number of times the child voids during the day and how many nights the child wets the bed.
Also, a thorough physical examination is necessary to look for any mass or enlarged bladder or any abnormalities in spine.
Parents should be inquired about the family and past history of the child.
Apart from this, Urinalysis is performed to test the specific gravity and osmolarity of urine. Also look for any signs of infection in the urine.
Imaging or other tests are used to detect other abnormalities –
- Cystoscopy (examination of the bladder using a cystoscope)
- Renal Ultrasound
- Voiding cystourethrogram (observation of abnormalities in urinary tract )
