Preventions

Peptic ulcer disease can be prevented by avoiding things that break down the stomach’s protective barrier and increase stomach acid secretion.

  • As alcohol intake is known to cause gastritis, drinking alcohol should be avoided.
  • Smoking suppresses prostaglandin secretion, thereby interfering with stomach’s protective barrier. To prevent ulcer formation smoking should be avoided.
  • To prevent infection with Helicobacter pylori, avoiding contaminated food, water and adhering to strict standards of personal hygiene is necessary. Wash your hands carefully with soap and water every time you use bathroom and before and after preparing food.
  • To prevent NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) induced peptic ulcer, reduce dosage and frequency of medication, and substitute NSAID with some other medication.
