- Atmospheric changes - high altitudes, dry climatic conditions, cold weather are known to dry out the nasal mucous membranes leading to crusts which can cause a nosebleed.
- Faulty Habits - Certain faulty habits especially in children like picking and boring at the nose constantly can lead to tearing of mucosa and cause Epistaxis.
- Diseases like common cold, sinusitis, allergies, nasal polyps – are known to have epistaxis as a common symptom
- History of bleeding disorders - Here there is a problem with the body's blood clotting process. There can be heavy bleeding if people with these disorders have injury. .
- Use of certain drugs like aspirin, NSAIDs, warfarin. - Patients with prolong use of these drugs are known to bleed easily as these drugs have blood thinning properties.
- Chronic smokers and drinkers - Drinking alcohol excessively can lead to epistaxis as alcohol prohibits blood clotting and dilates the blood vessels. Nicotine in cigarette smokes acts as an irritant in the nasal mucosa and can cause a nosebleed.
- Mental stressors - Patients who are under constant stress or worry or in an emotional turmoil are known to present with epistaxis as a triggering event.
